You are traveling and plan to stay in a hotel, but how can you protect yourself and your possessions from bed bugs? Once you get inside your room, it is a good idea to pull back the sheets and check the bedding and mattress for any visible bed bugs. It is also smart to take extra precautions in case you missed seeing any bed bugs and need to protect yourself from them. Here are some tips to help you prevent them from getting into your baggage or your clothing.
Know Where Bed Bugs Live
When you are traveling and you want to prevent bed bugs from finding their way from a hotel room and into your clothing or suitcase, it is helpful to know where they are often found. Knowing where they are found can help you prevent them from crawling onto and into your possessions.
Bed bugs tend to live in and around the mattresses, bedding, and around any cracks and crevices nearby these items. So, to keep your purse and suitcase free of the bed bugs, don't ever place them onto the floor or bed. Always place your luggage on a luggage stand or on the desk or table. You can also place them in the bathroom, as there are few places for bed bugs to hide inside the bathroom.
Use Extra Baggage and Clothing Protection
It can also be helpful to seal your clothes in a zip-closure bag, then open them inside the bathroom only when you need to remove or place items back into each of the bags. You can also place your entire suitcase, purse, and other baggage inside their own plastic trash bag.
Using plastic bags helps protect your baggage and clothing from a bed bug climbing upon them. Bed bugs will not find a plastic trash bag a comfortable environment for them and are less likely to crawl upon the plastic. If any bed bugs do get on your clothing you wear in the room, you will seal them up inside a zip-closure bag to launder for removal of any bugs when you get home.
Clean Up When You Get Home
When you get home, open your suitcase outside and vacuum its exterior and interior, disposing of any vacuum collection in an outside trash. Then, open up the zip bags containing your clothing items that may have been in contact with possible bed bugs, and immediately place them into your clothes washer and wash them on hot water.
