Seeing Fleas In Your Home? Tips To Get Them Out Before You Get Infested

Posted on: 1 December 2021

If you are seeing fleas in your home, you need to take steps now to get them out. If you do not the problem will become much worse. Because you have fleas you likely have pets that have them. The first thing to do is to treat them with either a pill or a spot treatment. You can then start the flea removal process.

Things You Can Do

There are things you can try on your own to kill the fleas.  Diatomaceous earth (DE) works well. If you purchase this make sure it says "food grade" on the bag. This type is non-toxic. There will be a lot of dust that gets into the air when applying the DE so wear a face mask for protection. You spread DE overall carpeting inside your home making sure you put enough for it to get deep into your carpet.

DE is made of fossilized algae and diatoms. The powder is very fine and easily gets down into the carpet. When a flea walks through the DE, or the DE gets on top of the flea they will die. This is because it causes them to dehydrate quickly. Leave the DE on your carpet for a couple of days then vacuum thoroughly. Remove the vacuum bag when you are finished and dispose of it outside just in case any are in the vacuum bag.

You can also steam clean your carpeting as the hot steam will kill fleas. If you use this also steam clean pet beds if your pet uses them.  Do a steam cleaning after you finish the DE process.

There are foggers and aerosol sprays that you can purchase to kill fleas. The aerosol spray works well as you can spray it directly onto the fleas. For example, if you know fleas are in a certain area you can spray them and kill them instantly. Foggers are placed in different areas of your home and the fog spreads and kills fleas.

Contact a Pest Control Company

If you still have fleas in your home, it is time to call in the professionals. A pest control company will spray the inside of your home with a spray much stronger than what you can purchase. They will need to come back again and spray a second time. This is because there may be flea eggs left behind that will hatch and cause this problem over again.

Along with spraying inside your home, the pest control company can spray outside in your yard. This is especially helpful if you have pets that go outside as they will not get fleas on them. The pest control company will also want to spray your yard a second time in case there are eggs. Adult fleas can hatch many eggs at one time.
